on memorizing

There are few things in this life that I love more than words.
Unusual? Perhaps. But its the best way I find happiness and comfort.

I've always said, that I would rather date words than boys. They never hurt you, or say the wrong thing. They are always there. You can always pick up a book at your leisure. They never get mad at you for not giving them enough time or attention. There is always a plethora of them--and always in different shapes, colors and sizes. You decide. I love that.

But my favorite part about words, is that they teach me something. Books and words cause me to ask questions. And when I get answers to questions, I gain more knowledge.

Books have become my best friends lately. I always have one in my backpack, in my purse, by my bed, on my desk, on the kitchen table. Everywhere. I think I've collected as many books while being in college as I have shoes--which is saying something.

But the best part about words and books is that we have a mind to memorize the words. Memorizing good things is a favorite trick of Elder Boyd K. Packer. I love to memorize, too. And I figure, I might as well use my brain for good, and memorize good things.

I have found that when trials and hard days come in my life--which happens--phrases from The Proclamation, The Living Christ, scriptures, and quotes come into my mind and it always turns my mind from downhill, to upward. It has been absolutely necessary for my success in life.

So I'll share with you a quote that has been stuck in my mind lately (and just for fun, i'll tell you, I memorized this while doing my laundry one day ;)

"We can lift ourselves and others when we refuse to remain in the realm of negative thought, and cultivate within our hearts, an attitude of gratitude."--President Thomas S. Monson

There are miracles and tender mercies to be found everywhere. Just look UP.

  1. I absolutely LOVE that talk by Pres. Monson. I even have "Looking Up" as a label on my blog. I am always telling myself to look on hard days. Bravo to you for memorizing that!
